Moustapha Dao was born in 1955 in Koudougou. He studied sound engineering at the African Institute for Cinematic Education (INAFEC). Afterwards, he took on production management at the Cinafric Studios in Kossodo (Ouagadougou). He worked at the National Film Center and the National Television of Burkina Faso. Moustapha Dao specialized in children’s cinema and directed several short films inspired by fairy tales. His first short film, “À nous la rue,” shot in 1987, depicts children from a working-class neighborhood of Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. In 1989, he drew inspiration from African fairy tales for his second short film, “Le neveu du peintre.” The 1991 film “L’enfant et le Caïman” emphasizes the importance of keeping one’s word. His latest film, “L’œuf,” is based on a Burkinabe fairy tale. Moustapha Dao has also regularly worked with street children.
